Ruyi - Melbourne, Victoria

Mushroom and crispy tofu skin parcels topped with caviar (3 pieces) 12

Peking duck cone - A traditional flavour served in a new way (2 pieces) 9

Handmade wonton in chilli sauce (6 pieces) 15

Scallops with golden rice 32

Wok fried mixed vegetables served in Nainai Fang’s homemade XO sauce 9

The good? Gorgeous space that is light, modern and understated but comfortable. Ruyi also boasts an impressive and ambituous ethos. Everything was cooked well.
The bad? It may have just come down to what we ordered, but some dishes were a little expensive, and while everything tasted fine, we couldn't really find any standouts or starring points to warrant the price. My dining partner and I both agreed that if dishes are to be "re-invented", then the overall quality and flavour should be equal to, or improve on, the existing dishes.
Would we go back? Maybe. There's nothing to really fault, so a good place for a business lunch perhaps, or if you're looking for something a little more comfortable than the typical Chinese restaurant.

Fukuryu Ramen - Melbourne, Victoria

Nori tofu $4.90

Chicken karaage $5.90

Tam tam ramen - "Spicy ramen! With minced pork topping" $9.90

Signature tonkotsu ramen - "Thick and creamy" $9.90

Free green tea soft serve

The good? The broth in the 'tam tam' was flavoursome, the egg was actually gooey inside, and the free green tea soft serve was a nice touch.
The bad? For a 'signature' dish, I was left a little disappointed with my tonkotsu ramen as I found it lacked flavour. Meanwhile, the 'tam tam' was flavoursome but was described as a spicy ramen and unfortunately we couldn't taste the spice. Luckily, you can add your own at the table.
Would we go back? Yes, we'd give it another go ... especially if we couldn't get into Sichuan House next door.

The xx at Festival Hall in Melbourne on Friday 5 April 2013

After missing their previous tours in Australia and also in NYC when Super Storm Sandy cancelled the show - we were ecstatic to finally see one of our favourite bands, The xx! Not only did we manage to see them in Melbourne, but we also won tickets to their second sold out show in Sydney (thanks heaps Frankie)! So we thought, hell - why not? Let's turn it into another awesome Sydney Weekender!

Please note our mushroom disclaimer from a previous post:
Here is the mandatory disclaimer: Everything I have read on mushrooms or describing mushrooms has to tell you that if you cannot tell with 100% certainty if a mushroom is edible or not – do not eat it.  I am saying this as well.  Don’t eat it if you don’t know.  Really.  I had to talk my father down on the phone a couple of days ago when he called me to say that he had picked some field mushrooms whilst playing golf.  Most likely he had picked yellow stainer mushrooms which would make him vomit and shit water for a week, but it could easily have been a death cap.  They are one of the most poisonous mushrooms in the world and are very common in Victoria.  The whole reason we signed up to go on a guided tour is to have an expert there to show us what to look for.
